About Christians Praying for Democracy
Christians Praying for Democracy formed in 2023 as a grassroots group of Christian friends seeking pray for our upcoming elections and our nation as a whole.
Our concern then and now is the growing tide of Christian Nationalism, which seeks to co-opt the Christian label without accompanying Christian witness. Many of us felt alone. Some of us found ourselves increasingly ostracized by our faith communities, who were choosing, at best, to turn a blind eye to the dangers of Christian Nationalism, or, at worst, to fully embrace this unchristlike ideology.
Then as now, our primary purpose was to support one another in both praying and acting on behalf of democracy in America and around the world. Our initial purpose was to pray during the season of Lent in 2024 for the upcoming elections. However, since that time, our concerns have only continued to grow.
We come from all walks of life. We are conservatives and progressives, evangelicals, mainline protestant and catholic, house church Christians and deconstructionists. We are united in believing that false Christianity in the form of Christian Nationalism is harming Christian faith and the witness of Christ in the world. We seek to shine a light on unrighteousness, and to put our feet to work on behalf of justice. Let the light shine in darkness. The darkness shall not overcome it!
